The SEAI home charger grant: €300, and how to get it

The SEAI home charger grant pays up to €300 towards a smart charger and its fitting, for a home with its own off-street parking. Apply online with your MPRN and Eircode, wait for the Letter of Offer, then have a Safe Electric registered electrician fit a charger from SEAI's Smart Charger Register within 6 months. Work started before the offer date loses the grant.

Who gets it, what it pays, the steps in order, and what you send to claim.

Free, no obligation. One registered electrician prices it, not five.

  • €300the most the grant pays
  • 6 monthsfrom the Letter of Offer to finish and claim
  • 4–6 weeksfor SEAI to pay, once it has every document

Who can get it

  • Homeowners, whether or not they own an electric car yet. The charger can also serve visitors or a home you rent out.
  • A private residence with its own off-street parking, with the charger and the work inside the property boundary.
  • One charger per MPRN, and only private individuals.
  • Not a property that already had an EV home charger grant, or a free ESB ecars home charger before 2018.

What it pays

100% of the charger and installation cost, up to €300, against invoices for both. Upgrades such as earthing, meter tails or bonding are not eligible. A standard fit costs more than €300, so the grant comes to the full €300: what the rest costs.

Match a charger to your car and your house

Four quick taps. Your plan builds up as you go: the charger that suits your car, the price range for your house, the grant and the time on site. Your number is only asked for at the end, if you want a fixed price.

A fully electric car, a charger on the house wall a few metres from a newer fuse board: €1,000 to €1,500 fitted, €700 to €1,200 after the €300 SEAI grant, including VAT.

Step 1 of 6

Where does the car park at night?

This decides the grant, the cable route and the price.

How this is worked out

We start from what a 7 kW smart charger costs fitted in Ireland, including VAT, with a standard fit: the charger, its own circuit from the fuse board and up to 5 metres of cable. A solar-aware charger costs more. Then we add what installers charge for a longer cable run, a trench to a garage or post, and fuse board work on an older board. The SEAI home charger grant comes off the charger and fitting, never off the board or earthing work. It is an estimate to plan with, never a quote: the electrician prices your house after looking at it.

The steps, in order

  1. Apply online. You need your 11-digit MPRN (it's on your electricity bill) and your Eircode. For a space in an apartment development, the landlord's or the block's MPRN.
  2. Wait for the Letter of Offer. It comes with a link to the Payment Request Form, and a separate Installation Details Form for your electrician.
  3. Book a Safe Electric registered electrician. Not before the start date on the Letter of Offer. The charger must be on SEAI's Smart Charger Register.
  4. Have it fitted within 6 months. If the work can't be finished in time, cancel and reapply later, unless the work has already started.
  5. Claim. Send the signed Payment Request Form, Certificate Number 3, the Test Record Sheet, the invoices for the charger and the fitting, and photos of the charger.

When it's paid

SEAI pays by bank transfer to the account on your Payment Request Form, after it checks the certificate and the electrician's registration. It typically takes 4 to 6 weeks from the day SEAI has every document. Funding is limited and the terms can change, so apply before you book.

For apartments and shared car parks there is a second scheme: the EV Apartment Charger Grant.
