Car charger installation in Galway
A home car charger in Galway costs €1,000 to €1,500 fitted with a standard fit, including VAT, or €700 to €1,200 after the €300 SEAI grant. Galway is a county of detached houses, where the car often parks well away from the fuse board, or beside a separate garage. The cable route is the thing to price.

Match a charger to your car and your house
Four quick taps. Your plan builds up as you go: the charger that suits your car, the price range for your house, the grant and the time on site. Your number is only asked for at the end, if you want a fixed price.
A fully electric car, a charger on the house wall a few metres from a newer fuse board: €1,000 to €1,500 fitted, €700 to €1,200 after the €300 SEAI grant, including VAT.
How this is worked out
We start from what a 7 kW smart charger costs fitted in Ireland, including VAT, with a standard fit: the charger, its own circuit from the fuse board and up to 5 metres of cable. A solar-aware charger costs more. Then we add what installers charge for a longer cable run, a trench to a garage or post, and fuse board work on an older board. The SEAI home charger grant comes off the charger and fitting, never off the board or earthing work. It is an estimate to plan with, never a quote: the electrician prices your house after looking at it.
Homes in Galway: driveways and fuse boards
89% of Galway households live in a house and 11% in an apartment (Census 2022). 59% of homes are detached and 21% semi-detached. On a detached house the car often parks further from the fuse board, so measure the cable route before you price it.
45% of Galway homes were built before 1991, against 52% nationally, and 37% in 2001 or later. That's a younger stock than average, so fewer boards here should need work first.
Public charging in Galway
In 2025 Galway had 177 public charge points at 61 locations, 107 of them fast (CSO). That's one public charge point for every 32 zero-emission cars taxed here, against 41 nationally, so public charging is easier to find here than in most counties.
Planning and the council in Galway
The SEAI grant and its rules are the same in every county: off-street parking at the home, with the charger and the work inside your boundary. A charging arm over a footpath is different. It needs the council's say first, a section 5 declaration (€80) or planning permission, from Galway City Council and Galway County Council.
