Six ways to lose the €300 charger grant
The grant is lost by starting before the Letter of Offer, fitting a charger that isn't on SEAI's Smart Charger Register, using an electrician who isn't Safe Electric registered, a property that already had a charger grant, missing the 6-month deadline, or a claim without the certificate, the test record, the invoices and the photos.
Each one, and how to avoid it. Most are about the order you do things in.
Free, no obligation. One registered electrician prices it, not five.
- Beforethe Letter of Offer: no work, no spending
- 6 monthsto finish and claim
- 1charger grant per MPRN
- 5documents in a valid claim
The six, and how to avoid them
- Starting too early. Work started before the start date on the Letter of Offer is ineligible, and so is spending before approval. Apply, wait, then book.
- The wrong charger. Only smart chargers on SEAI's Smart Charger Register are supported. Ask for the model before you agree a price, and check it's on the register.
- The wrong electrician. The work must be done by a Safe Electric registered electrician working to I.S. 10101, and SEAI checks the registration before it pays.
- A second claim on the same home. A property linked to an earlier home charger grant, or a free ESB ecars charger before 2018, can't claim. One charger per MPRN.
- Missing the deadline. You have 6 months from the Letter of Offer. If the work won't be done in time, cancel and reapply, unless it has already started.
- A claim with gaps. SEAI needs the signed Payment Request Form, Certificate Number 3, the Test Record Sheet, the invoices for the charger and the fitting, and photos.
Match a charger to your car and your house
Four quick taps. Your plan builds up as you go: the charger that suits your car, the price range for your house, the grant and the time on site. Your number is only asked for at the end, if you want a fixed price.
A fully electric car, a charger on the house wall a few metres from a newer fuse board: €1,000 to €1,500 fitted, €700 to €1,200 after the €300 SEAI grant, including VAT.
How this is worked out
We start from what a 7 kW smart charger costs fitted in Ireland, including VAT, with a standard fit: the charger, its own circuit from the fuse board and up to 5 metres of cable. A solar-aware charger costs more. Then we add what installers charge for a longer cable run, a trench to a garage or post, and fuse board work on an older board. The SEAI home charger grant comes off the charger and fitting, never off the board or earthing work. It is an estimate to plan with, never a quote: the electrician prices your house after looking at it.
No off-street parking?
That isn't a mistake you can fix with paperwork: the grant needs off-street parking at the home. What's open to you without a driveway.

Questions people ask
Why was my charger grant refused?
The grant is lost by starting before the Letter of Offer, fitting a charger that isn't on SEAI's Smart Charger Register, using an electrician who isn't Safe Electric registered, a property that already had a charger grant, missing the 6-month deadline, or a claim without the certificate, the test record, the invoices and the photos.
Can I get the grant after the charger is fitted?
No. The application and the Letter of Offer come first. Work before the offer's start date is ineligible.
What is Certificate Number 3?
The certificate the Safe Electric registered electrician completes for the charger work. They send it to Safe Electric Ireland, and it's part of your claim.
Can I change electrician after the Letter of Offer?
The offer is yours, not the electrician's, but whoever fits the charger must be Safe Electric registered and complete the Installation Details Form.
