Charging an electric car without a driveway
The SEAI home charger grant needs off-street parking, with the charger and the work inside your boundary, so a house that parks on the street gets no grant. A charging arm over the footpath needs planning permission or a section 5 declaration from the council before anyone fits it.
Why the grant needs off-street parking, the planning question on charging arms, and what's open to you.
Free, no obligation. One registered electrician prices it, not five.

Why there's no grant on the street
The SEAI home charger grant is for a private residence with its own off-street parking. The car has to park at the home, and the charger and the work have to be inside the property boundary. A house whose car parks on the road doesn't qualify, however close the space is to the front door. SEAI sets the rule.
Charging arms over the footpath
A charging arm swings a cable from the house over the footpath to the car. SEAI says a charger arm for a home without off-street parking needs either an exempted development declaration (a section 5 declaration, €80 from the council) or full planning permission. Dublin City Council said in April 2024 that it would oppose new ones, and councils have ordered unauthorised arms taken down. Get the council's answer in writing before anyone fits one.
Don't trail a cable across the footpath instead: it's a trip hazard for everyone walking past.
Match a charger to your car and your house
Four quick taps. Your plan builds up as you go: the charger that suits your car, the price range for your house, the grant and the time on site. Your number is only asked for at the end, if you want a fixed price.
How this is worked out
We start from what a 7 kW smart charger costs fitted in Ireland, including VAT, with a standard fit: the charger, its own circuit from the fuse board and up to 5 metres of cable. A solar-aware charger costs more. Then we add what installers charge for a longer cable run, a trench to a garage or post, and fuse board work on an older board. The SEAI home charger grant comes off the charger and fitting, never off the board or earthing work. It is an estimate to plan with, never a quote: the electrician prices your house after looking at it.
Making off-street parking
A driveway in the front garden means a new entrance onto the road. Where the road's surface is more than 4 metres wide, a new or wider entrance isn't exempted development, so it needs planning permission. Ask the council before you pay for anything, and check the kerb too: dropping it is the council's job.
Public charging near home
In 2025 Ireland had 3,416 public charge points at 1,125 locations, 1,883 of them fast chargers (CSO), and the CSO says the count is incomplete. That's one public charge point for every 41 zero-emission cars on the road. Each county page has its own figure: Dublin, Cork, Galway, Kildare, Meath.
The Department of Transport says a Private Wires Bill is meant to deal with home charging for houses without driveways. Until it's law, the options above are what's open to you.

Questions people ask
Can I get the SEAI grant if I park on the street?
No. The grant needs off-street parking at the home, with the charger and the work inside your boundary.
Can I run a cable across the footpath?
Don't. It's a trip hazard for people walking past, and a charging arm over the footpath needs planning permission or a section 5 declaration first.
Do I need planning permission for a charging arm?
SEAI says it needs either an exempted development declaration from the council (section 5, €80) or full planning permission. Some councils oppose them.
What if I make a driveway?
Once the car parks inside your boundary, a home charger and the grant are open to you. A new entrance onto a road more than 4 metres wide needs planning permission first.
