Charging your car from your solar panels

A solar-aware smart charger measures what your panels are sending to the grid and puts it into the car instead. Fitted, it costs €1,400 to €2,100, against €1,000 to €1,500 for a standard smart charger, and it takes the €300 SEAI grant if the model is on SEAI's Smart Charger Register.

How a solar-aware charger works, what it costs, and whether to fit one before the panels go up.

Free, no obligation. One registered electrician prices it, not five.

How it works

The charger reads what the house is sending to the grid through a sensor at the meter or the fuse board. When the panels make more than the house is using, it sends the spare power to the car instead of exporting it. When there isn't enough sun, you choose: wait for it, or top up from the grid at full speed, for example on a cheap night rate.

What it costs

A solar-aware charger costs €1,400 to €2,100 fitted, including VAT, against €1,000 to €1,500 for a standard smart charger. The difference is the charger itself and the sensor. The rest of the price works the same way: the cable run, any digging and the fuse board. The planner adds them for your house.

Match a charger to your car and your house

Four quick taps. Your plan builds up as you go: the charger that suits your car, the price range for your house, the grant and the time on site. Your number is only asked for at the end, if you want a fixed price.

This decides the grant, the cable route and the price.

How this is worked out

We start from what a 7 kW smart charger costs fitted in Ireland, including VAT, with a standard fit: the charger, its own circuit from the fuse board and up to 5 metres of cable. A solar-aware charger costs more. Then we add what installers charge for a longer cable run, a trench to a garage or post, and fuse board work on an older board. The SEAI home charger grant comes off the charger and fitting, never off the board or earthing work. It is an estimate to plan with, never a quote: the electrician prices your house after looking at it.

Panels later?

If you're planning panels in the next year or two, fit a solar-aware charger now. Swapping a charger later means paying for a second fitting, and the grant only pays once per home. The SEAI solar PV grant is a separate application with its own rules: solarpanelgrant.ie explains it.

Questions people ask

Can I charge my car from solar panels?

A solar-aware smart charger measures what your panels are sending to the grid and puts it into the car instead. Fitted, it costs €1,400 to €2,100, against €1,000 to €1,500 for a standard smart charger, and it takes the €300 SEAI grant if the model is on SEAI's Smart Charger Register.

Do I need a special charger for solar?

Yes, a solar-aware smart charger that reads what the house is exporting. A standard smart charger can still be scheduled for the sunniest hours, but it can't follow the panels.

Does a solar charger get the SEAI grant?

Yes, if the model is on SEAI's Smart Charger Register. The grant is up to €300.

Will it charge the car on a cloudy day?

From the panels, only slowly or not at all. You set it to top up from the grid when the sun isn't enough.
